Para Space Rock Heaters es un inmenso placer intercambiar unas palabras con un clásico de la escena punk y hardcore mundial. Joe Shithead, ya sea a través de los míticos doa, sus discos en solitario o su constante lucha contra todo aquello que no considera correcto es un ejemplo claro de coherencia y talento. Aquí os dejo con la entrevista que realizamos vía mail y que nos respondió en uno de esos pequeños huecos de tiempo libre que le queda involucrado en tantos proyectos como está.

1.-Dónde nació el apelativo de Shithead?
En 1977 , cuando empezamos con nuestra primera banda de punk rock , the Skulls (no los Skulls de L.A.) , a nuestro antiguo batería dimwit (rip) se le ocurrió el nombre, cogí el nombre y me hice el cantante de la banda. los skulls se separaron a comienzos del 78 y nunca editamos un disco.

2.- Cómo recuerdas los comienzos en el punk rock (skull, doa)?
Fue una época de rebelión y un montón de diversión. Estando ahí en los comienzos fuimos capaces de crear nuestro propio modo de tocar punk, que ha acabado influenciando a un montón de bandas a lo largo de los años.

3.-Tienes tu propio sello (sudden deaths). el primer sg de doa salió con este sello no?
Si , en sudden death records , lo puedes encontrar en www.suddendeath.com.
Sudden death ha sacado 75 discos diferentes.

4.-¿Cómo fueron los años en Alternative Tentacles? ¿y del disco con Biafra?
Alternative Tentacles es un buen sello. ”the last scream of the missing neighbors” es un disco realmente poderoso que todo el mundo debería oír , uno de los mejores discos en los que Jello ha cantado desde los Dead Kennedys.

5.-Qué nos puedes contar del sello en la actualidad? Bandas, proyectos, ect
He sacado un nuevo cd en solitario llamado “Joey Shithead and his band of rebels” . Es punk-a-billy , ska y roots punk.

6.- Me gustaría que nos hablaras de tu participación política activa en el partido de los verdes
Me presenté por el partido verde 3 veces aquí en Vancouver , Canada , y he sido un activista toda mi vida.

7.- Has escrito tu autobiografía, “Shithead: a life in punk”. Cómo nació el proyecto? ha sido divertido o doloroso recordar ciertos episodios de tu vida?
Fue sobre todo divertido , aunque por supuesto a veces también fue triste. Es una autobiografía , pero a la vez mira a la expansión de la contracultura punk-rock a través de Norteamérica y Europa , ya que generalmente éramos el primer grupo o uno de los primeros en tocar en muchas ciudades de todo el mundo.

8.- Debido a tu implicación política has tenido diversos problemas con la ley ¿Nos puedes contar algo sobre esto?
La policía solía grabar nuestras llamadas y cerraba los clubes y locales en los que íbamos a tocar. Todo se ha calmado pero da la impresión de que sigue jodiéndonos cada vez que puede.

9.- Hace poco vi “American hardcore”. ¿Cómo fue la participación en dicho documental? desde mi punto de vista hay grandes ausencias en el mismo (Poison Idea y sobre todo Dead Kennedys-Alternative Tentacles).
Si , estoy de acuerdo , también faltan los Misfits pero supongo que era la única manera de que saliera adelante legalmente. D.O.A. aparece (aunque seamos canadienses) por la influencia del grupo y porque a nosotros se nos ocurrió el término “hardcore”.

10.-También aparecerás en el nuevo documental “Punks not dead” que nos puedes contar sobre él?
No la he visto pero la conozco. Es una buena muestra con alrededor de 100 bandas en la película.

11.-A parte de DOA, llevas también una carrera en solitario ¿Cúantos discos ha sacado y que nos puedes contar sobre ellos?¿Cúales son las diferencias con el grupo madre?
Hago actuaciones ocasionalmente como artista de spoken word y como guitarrista acústico en solitario. Normalmente para la beneficencia.

12.-También realizas giras “spoken word”. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Dónde ofreces esos shows? Cómo responde la gente?¿Qué temas se tratan?
Hablo sobre activismo y el medio ambiente y cuento historias sobre los locos días con D.O.A.

13.- Es difícil compaginar tu vida personal con las actividades del grupo y tu lucha política?
No, realmente no, solo tienes que trabajar duro en la vida para hacer que ocurran las cosas que quieres, para conseguir tus objetivos.

14.- Ha habido algún momento en el cual hayas dicho “a la mierda todo”?

Bueno, pensé en ser abogado de derechos civiles cuando era más joven , pero creo que continuaré luchando por propiciar un cambio positivo en los años venideros.

15.- Con que discos de los que has participado te quedarías? Cúal es tu favorito?
Buena pregunta, D.O.A. ha editado 11 álbumes, todos me gustan por diferentes razones.

16.- Háblanos de tus grupos favoritos y de aquellos que te gusten y que la gente no espere que te gusten.
Mis músicos favoritos son Willie Nelson, John Fogerty y Bob Marley.

17.- En esta casa amamos a Nomeansno, con los cuales tienes una buena relación. que otros grupos pueden considerarse hermanos de Joey?
Si , Nomeansno están muy bien y son muy buenos amigos nuestros . tenemos muchos amigos por todo el mundo , así que la lista es larga...

18.- El 21 de diciembre es el día de DOA en Vancouver no?
El 21 de diciembre del 2001, el alcalde de Vancouver , Larry Campbell , declaró el 21 de diciembre como el día de D.O.A. en Vancouver . Fue un reconocimiento de la ciudad por lo que D.O.A. ha significado durante años. Por decirlo de algún modo, somos como embajadores culturales de Vancouver.
19.-Ya no te molesto más. Quieres añadir alguna cosa más?
Si , esta es mi filosofía básica:

• Se tu propio jefe
• Piensa por ti mismo
• Ayuda a aquellos que lo necesitan
• y trata de ejercer un cambio positivo en este mundo

1.- Where did the name "shithead" was born?
In 1977, when we started our 1st punk rock band called The Skulls (differenet than the Skulls of L.A.) Our old drummer Dimwit (R.I.P.) came up with the name , I took the name and became the band’s singer. The Skulls broke up in early 78 and we never released a record.

2.- How do you remember the begginings of punk rock (skull, DOA)?
It was a time of rebellion and a lot of fun, Being there at the start we were able to make up our own way of playing punk which has influenced a lot of bands over the years

3.- You have your own label (sudden deaths). The first DOA's 7” EP was released by this label, right?.
Yes on sudden Death Records which you can find at www.suddendeath.com

A.T. is a good label

The Last scream of the Missing Neighbors is a real powerful album hat everybody should hear, one of the best records Jello has sang on since he left the DK’s

4.- What can you tell us about your Label nowadays?, bands, projects... etc.
I have a new solo CD out called Joe Shithead and his Band of Rebels. It’s punk-a-billy, ska and roots punk.

5.-I would like you to tell us about your active political involvement with the green party.
I ran for the Green Party 3 times here in Vancouver, BC, Canada and I have been an activist all my life.

6.- You have written your biography, Shithead: A life in Punk. How did this project come to life?, Has been fun or painful to remember some epidodes of your life?
It was mostly fun, sometimes it was sad of course. It is an autobiography, but at the same time it looks at the spread counter culture/punk rock across North America and Europe , as we generally were the 1st or one of the 1st bands to play in many towns across the world.

7.- Due to your political activism you had some problems with the law. Can you tell ussomething about this?
We used to have police recording our phone calls and closing down clubs and halls that we were going to play at, that has quieted down. Although the police seem to still hassle us when they get the chance

8.- Recently I saw "American Hardcore", How was your participation in the aforementioned documentary?. From my point of view, there are big absentees on it (Poison Idea and, avobe all, Dead kennedys-Alternative Tentacles).
Yes I agree, it is also missing the Misfits, but I guess that’s the way it workd out legally. D.O.A. is in there (even though we are Canadian) because of the band’s influence and because we came up with the term “Hardcore”.

9.- You will show up too in the new documentary "punks not dead". What can you tell us about it?
I have not seen it but I know it i a good overview with about 100 bands in the movie.

10.- Besides DOA, you have your own single career. How many works have you released and What can You tell us about them?, Which are the differences with your main band?
I play occasional shows as a spoken word artist and as a solo acoustic guitar player. Usually for benefit shows.

11.- You also perform "spoken words" tours. How did this idea come up?, where do you perform these shows? How do the public answer?, Which topics do you talk about on them?
I talk about activism and the environment and I tell stories about crazy D.O.A. days.

12.-Is it hard to combine your personal life with your musical career and political struggle?
No, not really, you just have to work hard in life to make the things happen that you want, to realize your goals.

13.-There have been any moment on which you have thought "to hell with it all"?
Well I did think about being a civil rights lawyer when I was younger, but I think I have and will continue to bring about positive change for many years to come.

14.- talking about those where you have participated, which are your favourite musical works?, which one is the best?
Good question, D.O.A. has put out 11 albums, I like them all for different reasons

15.-Tell us, please, about your favourite bands, and those you like that you don't expect people to like.
My favorite are Willie Nelson, John Fogerty y Bob Marley.

16.- In this house we love NOMEANSNO, you have a good relation with them. Which others could be considered brothers of Joey?
Yes No Means No are real cool and good friends of ours.
We have a lot of friends all over the world , so the list is too long…..

17.- 21 Dec Doa... S Day? What Is This?
In 2001 on December 21st, Mayor Larry Campbell of Vancouver, delared Deecmber 21st to be D.O.A. Day in Vancouver. It was recognition by the city for what D.O.A. has done over the years. We are kind of like Vancouver’s cultural ambassadors , so to speak.

Yes, here’s my basic philosophy:
